Peak of Teide. At the very top of the volcano.
Mount Teide, climb to the top.
Climb Mount Teide in the easiest way possible. Take the cable car up and back down, and with a special permit from Teide National Park, access the trail that leads to the summit. The hike takes 30 to 40 minutes to ascend and 20 to 30 minutes to descend. The only difficulties are the high altitude and the resulting lack of oxygen; some sections can be slippery, it can be cold, or very cold, and the sulfurous fumes at the top can sometimes be bothersome. But the view from the summit makes up for everything. If we're lucky and there's no haze, we'll see Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, as well as almost all of Tenerife. Looking north, we'll see Icod at our feet; to the left or west, Teno, Masca, Garachico, La Palma, further southwest, La Gomera, and El Hierro. To the right, to the east, we'll see Tacoronte, La Laguna, Anaga, La Esperanza, Santa Cruz, Gran Canaria, and on some clear days, we might even see Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. And of course, the south of the island: Fasnia, Granadilla, El Médano… As Humboldt said when he climbed to the summit of Teide 200 years ago, the view was like a vast open map. A delight for any discerning traveler, the panoramic vista from the peak of Teide.
Access permit to the peak of Teide.
Pico del Teide, permit.A permit is required and must be requested as soon as possible. It is limited, and during peak tourist season, it's nearly impossible to obtain one unless applied for at least two or three weeks in advance. You will need to provide your full name and ID number, and you must carry your ID with you on the day of the hike, as you will need to show it at the trailhead for the summit of Mount Teide. Bring warm clothing, water, some food, and apply sunscreen frequently. A hat, cap, and sunglasses are also recommended. Appropriate hiking boots and trekking poles are very helpful. However, I have poles, boots, jackets, and hats available in the van if anyone doesn't have their own. The cable car ride is quick; in 7 minutes, you ascend from 2,300 meters to 3,555 meters, and then you have to hike to 3,715 meters. It's not difficult, but it is demanding on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Anyone with cardiopulmonary problems should refrain from taking this excursion.
